For the second week of Seniors’ Month, we have spoken to Joan Jones, who is our second Featured Senior.
Joan Jones knows the town of Amherstburg as well as anyone. At 84 years old, with no signs of slowing down, she has lived here most of her life, and continues to be active in the community. She loves getting out to watch her children and grandchildren play sports, and enjoys exercising and playing cards. However, Joan also does what she can to give back to the community. She actively volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program, where she delivers hot, fresh meals to local residents.
For Joan, helping others is nothing new. Having spent most of her life working in different areas of the healthcare industry, Joan has a unique view on her responsibility to give back when she can. When we spoke to her, she explained that she saw countless people throughout her career who clearly weren’t getting the support they needed at home.
“You keep wanting to help, and it doesn’t just go away when you get home from work, or even when you retire,” Joan said. “There’s also the golden rule that I try to keep in mind.”
That mentality pushed her to join the Amherstburg Community Services board of directors when the agency was still in its younger days. She has continued to be involved in the organisation ever since.
